Overlooking soy field

A new cartoon has been launched, exposing a new label for 'responsible' soy. Detective Pig investigates soy production in South America and finds out the truth behind this new label which is introduced on the European market this spring. It has been established by the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS), a voluntary certification scheme supported by agribusiness including Monsanto and Unilever, and a few NGOs including WWF.

The cartoon leads watchers to a petition that asks retailers and other soy users to not mislead consumers by this 'responsible' label, but rather move to real solutions which would lead to a shift away from soy imports and factory farming. Already over 16.000 people have sent this message to amongst others Carrefour, Unilever and Tesco. The animation is available in English, French, Dutch, Spanish, German and Danish.

Opposition Round Table Responsible Soy

We invite all organisations to sign the Open Letter below, opposing the 'responsible' label for monoculture soy (including GM soy), developed by the industry's Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS). Please find the text of the letter below and attached. The RTRS is holding its 5th conference 9-10 June 2010 in Sao Paolo, Brazil. It is expected that the label will be launched in Europe some time after the conference. This is the time to once more voice strong opposition to this greenwashing of industrial soy!

Sign petition, halt GM 'responsible' soy

GM Toxic soy is not 'responsible'! Can genetically engineered soy - grown with large amounts of agri-chemicals - ever be called 'responsible'? You probably consider this to be impossible. The damage that Monsanto's Roundup Ready soy has done in countries such as Argentina and Paraguay is enormous. Despite that, by the end of May this very same soy will be labelled 'responsible' by the Round Table on Responsible Soy.

The Round Table on Ir-Responsible Soy

This report, compiled by ASEED Europe, Base Investigataciones Sociales,Corporate Europe Observatory, Grupo de Reflexión Rural and the Rain Forest Action Network, looks at the impacts of soy production in Latin America ahead of the third Round Table on Responsible Soy conference, and warns that rather than promoting more sustainable production, the Round Table is legitimising the existing environmentally and socially destructive practices within the soy industry.

Roundtable on Responsible Soy - the certification smokescreen

The Roundtable on Responsible Soy launched its voluntary certification process in 2006, with the first certificates introduced in 2011. Audits of 10 of the companies certified have now been published online. This briefing by the GM Freeze, Friends of the Earth (England Wales and Northern Ireland) and Corporate Europe Observatory analyses the audits and finds they show little evidence of responsible soy production on the ground.
