Stop the EU's antidemocratic austerity policies - for a different Europe

Statement from the conference organised by Corporate Europe Observatory and Transnational Institute on the 5-6th of May. The Austerity Treaty – or the so called Fiscal Compact - if implemented, would pose a direct threat to the welfare state across Europe and be a major obstacle to redistributive, progressive and socially just economic policies in the future. It also represents the latest attempt to turn economic policy into a technocratic endeavour outside of democratic control, with unelected bureaucrats in a powerful, decision making role.

Brussels rally in solidarity with the Irish ''No'' campaign

A solidarity rally to the Irish people was held yesterday in Brussels on the call of Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO), la Centrale Nationale des Employés (CNE), Comités Action Europe (CAE) and Ander Europa.

Demonstrators underlined their intention to stand with the Irish people against the blackmail operation launched by governments and the leadership of EU to force them to vote in favour of a Treaty establishing austerity as the permanent economic policy in Europe.

Even the Police can’t stop the first signs of a European Spring

After months of preparation, the days of action organised by the coalition For a European Spring erupted into life last week. However, here in Brussels the police tried to stop it: first banning a peaceful demonstration and then arbitrarily arresting people after a peaceful occupation of the European Commission’s ‘Austerity HQ’. But despite their efforts, the seeds have now been sown, and the pan-European movement against undemocratic and destructive austerity policies is growing.

“There is only one vote!”

On 31 May the Irish people will take a stance on the Austerity Treaty, aka the Fiscal Compact, in a national referendum. As Ireland is the only country where the Treaty will be tested at a referendum, powerful players are pulling out the heavy artillery to prevent a ‘No’. As if aware that the Austerity Treaty has nothing good to offer, the only card up their sleeve is a high-pitched scare-mongering campaign. All kinds of threats are being used to force a Yes vote.

Opposition grows to EU austerity policies

As the European Union faces an ever-deepening crisis over its economic policies, more than 250 economists, activists and trade unionists will gather in Brussels on the 5th-6th May 2012 to call for an alternative way forward.
