Dear Commissioner,

In this open letter to Members of the European Parliament and Member States of the EU, 20 organisations such as the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), the farmers' union La Via Campesina or the European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility ask that the €10 billion budget cut foreseen to the EU' 2014-2020 Research budget (called Horizon 2020) only affect industry subsidies that will mainly go to large multinational companies, not public interest research which is vital for Europe's future.

Transparency, public health and tobacco control NGOs have today written to EU Commission President Barroso to complain about Commission officials having undisclosed meetings with tobacco lobbyists, in violation of UN rules. The undisclosed meetings are particularly controversial in the context of the Dalligate tobacco lobbying scandal, which led to the resignation of Commissioner Dalli under unclear and contested circumstances.

Corporate Europe Observatory, alongside Lobby Control and Corporate Accountability International, have today submitted a formal complaint to European Commission President Barroso over the controversial reappointment of Michel Petite to the Commission’s ad hoc ethical committee.

Earth Open Source and Corporate Europe Observatory have written to EFSA's executive director about undeclared current activities with ILSI by an EFSA panel member. EFSA has so far not acted on this case, which sheds doubts on the implementation of EFSA's new independence rules. Not declaring such activities was in contradiction to the former rules, too.

CEO has responded to a - not overly advertised - public consultation by the European Commission (DG Sanco), on the revision of the EFSA founding regulation.
A letter was sent by Testbiotech and Corporate Europe Observatory to the member states regarding Management Board of EFSA. The letter is about the case of Mella Frewen, who was nominated by the European Commission to the EFSA Management Board. Mella Frewen's previous positions include Director for Government Affairs, Europe, Middle East & Africa, for Monsanto, where she dealt with a number of issues including agricultural biotechnology and agro-chemistry. We believe that the appointment of Mella Frewen will create conflicts of interest within the food agency's management board.
As a member of the 'Troika', the European Commission (with the International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank) has been responsible for setting the loan conditions for Greece, Portugal and other countries receiving rescue loans in the context of the sovereign debt crisis. These conditions, which have been widely criticised for the emphasis on cutting public budgets, include in the cases of Greece and Portugal large-scale privatisation of public services, including water utilities. We believe that this privatisation conditionality is unacceptable and seriously undermines the right to water.

CEO has responded to EFSA's threat to take legal action regarding the use of an illustration on Corporate Europe Observatory’s website . EFSA claims this illustration constitutes an “unauthorised use of EFSA’s logo and name” and that this entitles EFSA to take legal action “to ensure that the use ceases”.

On Friday 16 September, CEO received a letter from the European Food Safety Authority threatening legal action regarding the use of their logo and name in our article on conflicts of interest among members of EFSA's expert panel on food additives.
