Warum Bundestag und Bundesrat das umstrittene EU-Kanada Abkommen jetzt zu Fall bringen sollten - und wie das gelingen kann

Hunderttausende sind in Europa gegen das Handelsabkommen CETA zwischen der EU und Kanada auf die Straße gegangen. Auch in Kanada hat die Zivilgesellschaft gegen CETA mobil gemacht. Sie sieht in dem Abkommen eine Gefahr für die Demokratie, die Rechte von Arbeitsnehmer- und Verbraucher*innen sowie für Umweltschutz und den Kampf gegen den Klimawandel.

Trotz dieses Widerstands sind weite Teile des CETA Vertrags seit September vorläufig in Kraft getreten, nachdem der Rat der EU, das Europaparlament und die kanadische Regierung den Vertrag ratifiziert hatten. Im Vorfeld war CETA in Medien und Politik zu Unrecht als Blaupause einer fairen, sozialen und ökologischen Handelspolitik dargestellt worden ˗ und als angebliches Signal für eine fortschrittliche Gestaltung der Globalisierung im Kontext des wachsenden Nationalismus.

Allerdings: Erst wenn CETA in allen EU-Mitgliedstaaten ratifiziert worden ist, kann er vollständig in Kraft treten. Bisher ist das erst in 7 der 28 EU-Staaten passiert. In allen anderen Ländern kann CETA noch gestoppt werden ˗ in Deutschland beispielsweise von Bundestag und Bundesrat.

Gemeinsam mit Ihnen möchten wir darüber diskutieren, wie es nach der Bundestagswahl um CETA steht. Bleiben Grüne und Linke bei ihrem angekündigten "nein"? Wie sieht die aktuelle Debatte innerhalb der SPD aus, die bisher in punkto CETA gespalten war? Welche Chancen bieten die Koalitionsverhandlungen? Wie stehen die Chancen, CETA im Bundestag oder -rat zu verhindern? Und was ist dran an der Rede vom angeblich fortschrittlichen CETA im Interesse von Mensch und Umwelt?

Eine Veranstaltung von Berliner Bündnis TTIP CETA TISA stoppen, dem Forum Umwelt und Entwicklung, Lobbycontrol und Corporate Europe Observatory.
