December 19th, 2013: citizens, farmers, NGOs and trade unions from across Belgium took to the streets of Brussels to fight against the relentless march of the EU's neoliberal austerity policies (the Fiscal Compact, or TSCG in Belgium) and big business-driven free-trade agenda (the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP), both imposed from above with no popular legitimacy. Together more than 2,500 people blockaded the EU Summit where our so-called leaders were supposed to meet.
But while we made ourselves heard, made some politicians and policy makers sit up and listen, the dangers are still there: new austerity measures continue to be handed down from the European Commission and our unrepresentative leaders in the European Council; big business and the Commission continue to negotiate a trade deal behind closed doors, despite the odd concession to transparency and civil society involvement due to public pressure.
Therefore we need to build on our success, build on our strength in diversity, and build towards the next moment that together we can show Elio Di Rupo, Karel De Gucht and Herman Van Rompuy that the only Europe we want is a Europe from the bottom-up, democratic and just, built on solidarity and cooperation rather than the often-repeated dogmas of competitiveness and neoliberalism which amount to nothing more than a race to the bottom for society, the economy and the environment, breeding hatred and the fascism we now-frequently witness.
As both European and Belgian elections approach, citizens across Europe plan to take to the streets in a prolonged week of action (May 15th-25th), showing solidarity beyond borders and building democracy from below. D19-20 wants to be part of it, but as a citizens' alliance supported by organisations, that means you wanting to be part of it, you helping shape what it looks like and you bringing forward energy, passion and commitment. Because only together can we create the force needed to change the direction of events and alter history.
Join us at the next General Assembly, Monday 3rd February 2014, 20h00-22h00, to join the discussion on where next for D19-20 and how we can continue to grow beyond the organisations and individuals already involved, grow in voice, in number, in diversity, in power, and keep fighting the EU's neoliberal agenda of austerity, free-trade and fascism.
