ALTER-EU seeks intern to work on new campaign

The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU) is looking for an intern to join its small team and help it to launch and coordinate a new campaign “Stand up against excessive lobbying from banks and big business”, to run before and during the EU parliamentary elections in May 2014. ALTER-EU is a coalition of more than 200 civil society groups (including CEO) concerned with the increasing influence exerted by corporate lobbyists on the political agenda in Europe and the resulting loss of democracy in EU decision-making.

ALTER-EU is looking for an intern to provide support to the ALTER-EU coordinator and steering committee (consisting of seven civil society groups) on this project. Day to day tasks will vary but you could find yourself: sourcing MEP candidate lists; liaising with activists and campaigners across Europe; working with website designers; spearheading social media actions; and drafting campaign materials. Meanwhile ALTER-EU offers you an opportunity to strengthen your campaign skills and to participate in an exciting pan-European initiative!

“Stand up against excessive lobbying from banks and big business” will be a pan-European pledge campaign, aimed at engaging citizens in the EU parliamentary election process by mobilising them to directly contact MEP candidates standing for election. Citizens will call on candidates to formally pledge to improve EU accountability by introducing robust lobby transparency rules and limiting undue influence once elected. A user-friendly website will highlight MEP candidates that have (or have not) agreed to the pledge, thus demonstrating that there is a choice to be made between those candidates who have committed themselves to transparency, accountability and the public interest and those who have not. ALTER-EU was part of a similar initiative during the 2009 elections: http://www.electioncampaign.eu/

This position is full time (36 hours per week) for a period of seven months, starting as soon as possible. The position is based in central Brussels, in ALTER-EU's small office in the Mundo-B building near the Porte de Namur. The gross salary is 1000 euro per month.

Candidate profile and requirements

  • must be committed to ALTER-EU's values, vision and mission;

  • good understanding and experience of campaigning. Pan-European campaign experience will be especially valued;

  • good oral and written communication skills with the ability to adapt for a variety of audiences;

  • good understanding of, and experience of using, social media for campaign purposes, plus good IT skills;

  • good attention to detail;

  • ability to work closely with others in a team, in an often high-pressured environment;

  • ability to manage own workload without close supervision;

  • fluent English (other EU languages an advantage).

If you are interested in applying for this position please send your CV and a covering letter to info@alter-eu.org by 5pm, Friday 8 November 2013. Your letter should highlight how your skills and experience are well-suited to the requirements of this position. Short-listed candidates will be contacted by Friday 15 November.
