#StopGlyphosate

Alongside numerous organisations from all over Europe, Corporate Europe Observatory supports the European Citizens Initiative #StopGlyphosate. You can sign the petition at the bottom of this page. We hope to collect signatures from at least one million EU citizens to urge the European Commission to propose the following to national governments:

  • Ban Glyphosate-based herbicides

The exposure to these has been linked to cancer in humans, and has led to ecosystems degradation. Glyphosate is still one of Europe’s most widely used pesticides, and its negative impacts on the environment and biodiversity are clearly documented. In addition, a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrates that glyphosate is also a serious threat to human health. EU Regulation 1107/2009 prohibits the use of pesticides when there is sufficient evidence in laboratory animals that these substances can cause cancer, based on IARC criteria. Therefore, the EU approval for glyphosate must be withdrawn.

  • Require EU scientific evaluation of pesticides to be based on published studies only

The Commission must ensure that the scientific evaluation of pesticides for EU regulatory approval is only based on published scientific evidence, which is commissioned by competent public authorities instead of the pesticide industry. Regulatory studies should be published in full and open to scientific scrutiny. The potential for conflicts of interest should be eliminated, by disconnecting contracting laboratories’ finances from the commissioning procedure, and by prohibiting pesticide producers from choosing which authority they charge and pay for the authorisation procedure.

  • Set EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use

Mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use are the key to a pesticide-free future. EU Directive 2009/128/EC requires that pesticides should only be used when all other methods have failed, and mandates EU member states to establish concrete measures and objectives to reduce overall pesticide use. Member states are currently not sufficiently implementing the directive, and the European Commission has yet to evaluate its effect.

Importantly, support measures for farmers must be part of the picture too.
